Dear Friends,
I’m sad to report on the passing this week of George Loder, who dedicated much of his life to the service of our community. George was the city’s animal control warden for more than 25 years, worked at the Ocean City Youth Center for 15 years and was a role model and mentor to the town’s youth.
The Ocean City Exchange Club recognized him with its annual Book of Golden Deeds Award this year. George loved the outdoors and was quick to share his knowledge with anybody interested in shooting, hunting, fishing and boating.
I hope you all will join Michele and me in extending deepest condolences to the family and friends of George. He will be greatly missed.
Memorial Day Weekend is dedicated to the memory of those who sacrificed their lives in the defense of our country, but I also want to ask you to take time to mourn the loss of the 19 children and two teachers killed in a school shooting in Texas this week.
It’s hard to fathom the grief of parents who sent their boys and girls to school, never imagining that such a such a senseless tragedy could occur.
It happens far too often. Let’s pray that we can find a way to make sure no family has to suffer such a loss again.
We launched another summer season today with a handful of events at the Ocean City Music Pier. Our daily flag-raising ceremony began for the season and will continue every morning at 9 a.m. through Sept. 11.
Law enforcement agencies throughout the region honored a 10-year-old battling cancer by naming him an honorary police officer during an 11 a.m. event. Davarjaye “D.J.”
Daniel has completed a mission to be sworn in by 100 different agencies, and he’s continuing his mission to support men and women in blue and inspire others to achieve their dreams despite their personal obstacles.
Please join me in congratulating and welcoming D.J., the newest member of our police department.
You’ll be glad to know that we officially unlocked the ocean for the season in a ceremony at noon, and our annual Business Persons Plunge took place shortly afterwards.
If you haven’t purchased them already, remember to get your 2022 beach tags before the price goes up on Wednesday. See
more information.
The Ocean City Beach Patrol will begin its season tomorrow.
See list of guarded beaches for the holiday weekend. Our new summer jitney service launches this evening.

Finally, I want to encourage you all to take some time out from the holiday weekend to pay tribute to the veterans who sacrificed their lives to defend our freedoms. Our annual
Memorial Day Ceremony is at 11 a.m. Monday at Veterans Memorial Park.
Warm regards,
Mayor Jay A. Gillian
