A 22-year-old Ocean City man died Saturday when his plane crashed in a field near Paramount Air Airport in Middle Township, according to authorities.
At approximately 9:40 a.m., the Middle Township Police Department was notified of a plane crash at the airfield.
Thomas Gibson, the pilot of a single-engine Piper PA-12, was pronounced dead at the scene. Only Gibson was aboard, according to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration Saturday night.
Members of the Middle Township Patrol Division secured the scene with the assistance of the Green Creek and Rio Grande Fire Departments, according to police.
The Middle Township Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit responded with the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office.
The investigation of the crash was turned over jointly to the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which will determine the cause of the crash.
The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation and will provide additional updates.
