Dear Friends,
The Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce celebrated its 100th anniversary Friday night at a special dinner dance at the Ocean City Yacht Club. The event had been planned for last year but was postponed due to the pandemic.
The Chamber was founded in 1920 and one of the first tasks of the new organization was the creation of an emblem designating “America’s Greatest Family Resort.” In the century since then, all of Ocean City’s member businesses have worked tirelessly to advance and preserve the family-friendly atmosphere that sets us apart from other towns.
All the people who have invested in property here, everybody who makes Ocean City their home, and all our loyal guests should be grateful to our Chamber members. Ocean City is a much better place for all their hard work. I hope you all will join me in congratulating the Chamber and wishing them another century of outstanding success.
Although its projected path is more than 800 miles away, Hurricane Sam is expected to generate big surf and rough ocean conditions this weekend. The water is still warm but please refrain from swimming in unsafe conditions. The Ocean City Beach Patrol is done guarding beaches for the season, and only a rapid response team will be on hand to protect bathers.
The Fire Department invites everybody in the community to its annual Open House 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. next Thursday, Oct. 7 at the station at 550 Asbury Avenue. The event gives families a chance to enjoy fun activities and refreshments while learning about the department and fire safety.
The lights on the Ninth Street Bridge will turn pink in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. They had been gold through September for pediatric cancer.
I hope you all have a great weekend with family and friends and enjoy this beautiful fall weather while it lasts.
Warm regards,
Mayor Jay A. Gillian
