Mayor's Message: July 23

  • News
Dear Friends, I had the honor last weekend of attending a ceremony recognizing Daniel and Liam Millar for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. Reaching that level is a remarkable accomplishment for any individual, but for a pair of brothers to share in the honor is something truly special. These two exceptional young men have contributed a lot to the community in their scouting careers. I’m proud that they are part of Ocean City, and their parents, Mike and Rose, should be proud as well. At last night’s meeting, City Council Vice President Mike DeVlieger announced that he would step down from office in August. I want to thank Mike for his more than nine years of public service. All our elected officials devote a lot of time, energy and passion to their positions with little in return other than the satisfaction of serving their communities. I hope you’ll all join me in paying tribute to Mike for all his hard work on behalf of Ocean City. Night in Venice is tomorrow, and I hope you all get a chance to enjoy our 66th annual boat parade and the fireworks afterwards. I want to urge all motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians to use extreme caution on streets and sidewalks that are sure to be crowded. As always, the Ocean City Police Department will be highly visible along the parade route, streets and bay waters surrounding the area. I also want to remind everybody that Ocean City does have a noise ordinance that limits loud music and noise after 10 p.m. If you’re hosting a party, please have fun but be respectful of your neighbors. After missing last year’s celebration, it will be great to see Night in Venice return. Our theme this year is “Honoring Our Heroes,” and we all should take a moment to thank all of the health care workers, first responders, essential employees and others who helped us get through the year and get back to normal. Our grand marshals this year will be Dr. Christopher Lucasti, Dr. Charles Roche, Dr. Jeanne Rowe, Dr. Jason Chew and Dr. Gary Raab. I hope you all have a safe and fun weekend. Warm regards, Mayor Jay A. Gillian
