The Cape May County Health Department reported Friday that an 89-year-old man from Lower Township has died from COVID-19.
The total number of coronavirus cases in Cape May County is now 346, including 22 deaths, according to a county press release.
“On behalf of the Cape May County community, we express our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the gentleman who died. Our thoughts go out to all residents who are grieving losses while battling this virus,” Cape May County Freeholder Jeff Pierson said in the release.

The spread of coronavirus in nursing homes throughout New Jersey has claimed many lives.
According to the State Health Department, the number of nursing homes where residents have been diagnosed with COVID-19 is 498, with 19,153 positive cases and 3,488 deaths.
In Cape May County, seven long-term care facilities have outbreaks with over 144 positive cases and 16 deaths.
The State Health Department’s epidemiologist and Cape May County Health Department’s public health nurses have investigated and provided continued guidance to all long-term care facilities throughout the county.
The adherence to state Health Department infectious control guidelines and recommendations by all long-term care facility staff are critical in stopping the spread of COVID-19.
