Library Hosts Virtual Musical Baseball Show

Miss the grand old game? Check out Howie Newman’s Musical Baseball Show on July 9. Through the magic of Zoom, the Ocean City Free Public Library is presenting a virtual baseball concert on Thursday, July 9, at 7 p.m. This unique program, featuring singer-songwriter Howie Newman, includes baseball songs, trivia, stories about his time on the major league beat and a few surprises. Included in his repertoire is a song about former Phillies reliever Tug McGraw. The show is free, but reservations are required. To register, visit the library website at www.oceancitylibrary.org. You must have a desktop computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone in order to “attend” the concert. If you’re not familiar with Zoom, a library staffer will guide you through the virtual meeting process. Newman, a former sportswriter for the Boston Globe, Associated Press, Oakland Tribune and other publications, covered the World Series in 1985 and ’86. He has also remained an avid fan, having visited 94 major and minor league ballparks, including the last three parks in Philadelphia. “Baseball is the one sport that really lends itself to music,” said Newman, whose experience also includes three years of minor league radio color commentary. “I’ll be playing my own baseball songs and a few other baseball standards that everyone knows.” He added, “We’ll talk baseball, do some trivia and just have fun. If people have questions about what it’s like to cover major league ball, I’ll be happy to answer them.
