Bay Avenue Construction Halted Until Fall

  • News
Construction work on a Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority project that caused traffic headaches and detours on Bay Avenue for months is being halted for the summer, the city announced Tuesday. Mayor Jay Gillian said in a statement last week that he had asked the utilities authority to suspend work until the fall “due to the unsafe and unacceptable condition of the road.” Temporary paving to restore Bay Avenue begins at 7 a.m. Wednesday at 31st Street and will continue through Friday. Bay Avenue will be closed in segments as paving work continues northward. Police will assist with traffic control. The utilities authority has been replacing and rehabilitating the force mains that carry wastewater to its treatment plant on the bay at 45th Street.
The installation of new pipes and other work on Bay Avenue stretched from 31st Street to Eighth Street. Motorists have been forced to navigate through construction, lane closures and detours while the project has dragged on for months. As the peak summer tourism season gets underway, the mayor called on the utilities authority to suspend the project to avoid further traffic disruptions. Work is scheduled to resume in the fall, the city announced.
