Dear Friends,
The Ocean City Board of Education put out a call to action on Wednesday for everybody to be safe for the holidays by avoiding large gatherings and continuing to wear masks, to social distance and to do everything possible to limit the spread of COVID-19. The district is hoping to return to full-time, in-school learning by Feb. 1.
I fully support this initiative and want to join the district in urging everybody to follow safe holiday behavior. The kids need to be back in school, and we all can help them get there by slowing the spread of the virus. Even though vaccines have now been approved, it will take some time before the community can rest easy. Let’s not be reckless when we’re so close to the finish line.
The state Department of Community Affairs just announced that Ocean City will receive a $2 million grant for affordable housing. Our court-ordered obligation to build affordable units in town is substantial, so it’s great to see this relief for our taxpayers, and the grant will leave more money in our affordable housing trust fund.
We were able to avoid the worst of the winter storm that hit other areas this week, and the upcoming forecast looks good. I hope you all have a great weekend.
Warm regards,
Mayor Jay A. Gillian
