Bay Avenue Construction Update

  • News
The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority is replacing and rehabilitating the force mains that carry wastewater to the treatment plant on the bay at 45th Street. The work is being done on 31st Street from Haven Avenue to Bay Avenue and Bay Avenue from 31st Street to Eighth Street. The contractor has installed new 20-inch diameter pipe, backfilled and temporarily paved over the entire length of the project, except for an approximately 60-foot long segment that lies between 11th and 10th streets. When work resumes on Monday, Bay Avenue will be open to local traffic only between 14th and Ninth streets, with all work areas and materials zoned off.
Other work scheduled during the week includes tapping into the existing 10-inch diameter force main at a point that is now within the valve vault that was installed on the property of the Municipal Utilities Authority’s 20th Street Pump Station, and the installation of vent piping and air release valves that serve the concrete chambers that have been installed throughout the length of the project. Neither of these tasks will require traffic shutdowns. Traffic control will be handled with lane shifts. For the longer term, it is expected that the new 20-inch pipe will become operable by about the end of April. At that time, the slip-lining of the existing 20-inch diameter force main will begin. The slip-lining phase of the project is expected to extend to mid to late June. It is not expected that large traffic detours will be required while slip-lining is ongoing and that traffic control will be handled via lane shifts. See full project update
