OCHS Key Club's Second Annual St. Baldrick’s Day Event Raises $3,000 for Childhood Cancer Research

  • News
Ocean City High School’s Key Club organized and hosted their second annual St. Baldrick’s Day event on Friday, May 25 during community lunch in the main gym. St. Baldrick’s is a non-profit organization that raises money that is put towards research for cures for childhood cancer.  While many students signed up before the event, other student bystanders decided to support the cause and signed up on the spot to shave their heads/cut their hair. Amy Kohl and the OCHS Color Guard kicked off the event by putting on a great performance at the fundraiser. Stylists from Fabiana Edwards Studio Salon of Ocean City, Dina Martin of Reflections Unisex Hair Salon in Marmora, and Erin Summerson of Pig Tails Hair Salon of Somers Point graciously donated their time to shave and cut the participants’ hair. Senior Caleb Gartner raised the most of all the students and participants with $1,110 in donations. Mike Torrence of Marmora, father of sophomore Emily Torrence, joined our event as he was looking for a fundraiser to join. He was able to raise $540 and had his head shaved for our event at Fabiana Edwards Salon of Ocean City.
Two of our Science Department teachers Dan Weaver and David Uhrich, again participated in the event and helped to raise awareness for the need for funding and to stand in solidarity with the children who do not have a choice as to whether or not they lose their hair. These two teachers can always be counted on to volunteer for any and every event at the high school; OCHS is lucky to have them. Like last year, ladies donated their hair to Children With Hair Loss, a non-profit wig-making organization that we used last year. This organization was chosen because we felt that their mission correlated with our goal of making wigs that are free for children living with cancer, as well as accepted color-treated hair. To us, it’s hair. To women battling cancer, it’s hope. THE FINAL NUMBERS from 2018: -2 TEACHERS -13 HEADS SHAVED -12 HAIRCUTS -$3,000 RAISED We would like to thank the following local businesses for supporting our cause with monetary donations: Bernie’s Barber Shop, Randazzo’s Pizza, Henry’s Trading Post, Dino’s in Sea View, 16th Street Seafood, and the Ocean City Police Department.
