Dear Friends,
The Ocean City Boardwalk reconstruction project is complete in time for Palm Sunday and Easter Weekend, which mark the start of a full calendar of special events for the year. Schiavone Construction is finishing a punch list of items, and I want to thank their entire team for doing a quality job. From sand to railings, the entire boardwalk between Fifth Street and 12th Street has been rebuilt.
I want to thank all of the boardwalk merchants, runners, bikers and walkers who have put up with the detours and closings over the past five off-seasons. This important investment will ensure that the boardwalk is ready to serve new generations of Ocean City residents and visitors.
Crews working for New Jersey American Water continue to make emergency repairs to a sewer main on 46th Street between Asbury Avenue and West Avenue. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the work is expected to be complete and the road reopened by 10 p.m. tonight.
I had a great meeting this morning with representatives of Atlantic City Electric. Multimillion-dollar infrastructure investments in the past five years have dramatically improved reliability – with 40 percent fewer outages across the region. I also learned about the Helping Hands, which provides assistance for those having difficulty paying electric bills. Anybody who wants to learn more about the program can visit
atlanticcityelectric.com or contact customer service at 800-642-3780.
A planned Atlantic City Electric power outage is now scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday (March 28). The interruption of service had been postponed a couple times due to the weather. The outage will affect the area between North Street and 13th Street and is expected to last no more than 15 minutes. We will send reminders to residents of the affected area as March 28 approaches.
A water company project continues on Eighth Street and a portion of the road is expected to be closed between West Avenue and Haven Avenue starting at 8 a.m. Monday (March 19). Access to Acme from Eighth Street will remain open.
I want to remind you all that our Department of Fire and Rescue Services will hold a swearing-in ceremony at 6 p.m. tonight (March 16) at the Ocean City Tabernacle. The event will include the swearing-in of Jim Smith, who is the 18th chief in the 125-year history of the Ocean City Fire Department. The ceremony also will welcome members of each rank of the fire department, including deputy chief, captain and firefighter. The Ocean City Beach Patrol chief of operations and captain will be sworn in, and retired OCBP Chief of Operations Tom Mullineaux will be honored for his 51 years of service. Everybody is invited to attend this traditional event and show their support for these first responders and public servants.
Warm regards,
Jay A. Gillian
Mayor
