Hooked on Houses: The Surf Shack

  • News
In 1947 Harry Truman was president, the Polaroid Camera made its debut, Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier, Miracle on 34th Street premiered, Farrah Fawcett was born, and the Frisbee was invented.  In addition, Marvel Enriched Bread was 13 cents a loaf, oranges sold for 49 cents a dozen, a United States Postal stamp was 3 cents, and the average cost of a gallon of gas was 15 cents.
In this same year Skip’s parents bought their dream beach house in Ocean City for $4500.00. The taxes that year were a whopping $4.12.    Skip summered in the upstairs loft with his parents each season, while they hosted weekly tenants all summer long in the 3+ bedroom 1 bath downstairs unit.  The rentals enabled the Engelman’s to have their cake and eat it too. The best part of this story is that Skips family has maintained its vintage charm over the years. Whether it is the knotty pine paneling, the wooden framed living room furniture, the hand painted kitchen cabinets, the claw foot tub, the unique sleeping porch located toward the back of the cottage, or the outdoor laundry, this entire building is a step back in time.  The design style inside is now being sold in interior design studios and designers would consider it a coupe to find these furnishings and accessories. Décor mimics fashion in that what goes around comes around. The unassuming exterior does not give any hint to the vintage charm this surf shack holds inside.  This is a must see.
