Mayor Jay Gillian issued this message at 5 p.m. tonight:
As you all know by now, Ocean City experienced a major winter storm today. Our Public Works crews will continue to work around the clock with every piece of available equipment. They are facing extremely difficult conditions. I want you to know that this will be a multiple-day cleanup. Clearing emergency routes and essential corridors will be the top priority. Then they will move on to other streets. I ask you to please be patient as this work gets done.
Travel conditions remain dangerous with deep snowdrifts blocking roadways in some places and snow hiding icy surfaces in others. I ask everybody to stay off the roads, stay home and stay warm. Many of the drivers who have ventured out are now stuck in different places throughout town, making the cleanup even harder.
The 400 Block of Asbury Avenue is blanketed with snow.
Our police and fire departments are both equipped with vehicles that can quickly reach any location in town. We will be able to respond if you are in need. Call 911 for any emergency. For non-emergencies, call police at 609-399-9111 or City Hall at 609-399-6111.
The schools will be closed again tomorrow, and the Ocean City Aquatic and Fitness Center and Ocean City Free Public Library will remain closed until further notice.
Please check on your neighbors and their properties to make sure everybody is safe. I will update you all again at noon Friday. In the meantime, you can check for updates at www.ocnj.us. We will continue to use our emergency notification systems, if necessary.
