Mayor's Update: February 23

  • News
Dear Friends, At last night’s City Council meeting, I delivered the administration’s proposed city budget for 2018. This is the first step in the budget process. Finance Director Frank Donato will make a presentation on budgeted revenues and expenses at the March 8 meeting. City Council will formally “introduce” the budget at the March 22 meeting. Council will then work on potential revisions until a final public hearing and vote on April 26. The mayor’s proposed budget
and my State of the City address from last night are both available online for everybody to see. I want to remind everybody about a reception tonight at the Ocean City Historical Museum, where a new exhibit revisits the history of our African American community. The event is open to the public and takes place 7 to 8:30 p.m. I encourage everybody to come out and learn more about this important part of our history. I will join a group of federal, state, county and municipal officials outside the Ocean City Music Pier at 9:30 a.m. Monday to voice opposition to a proposal that would allow drilling for oil and gas off the shores of New Jersey and the East Coast. The news conference will overlook the Atlantic Ocean, beach and dunes as a reminder of what is at stake in the event of a spill, if offshore drilling were ever approved. Atlantic City Electric’s planned power outage that had been scheduled for Monday (Feb. 26) has been postponed. The new date for the interruption of service will be on Wednesday, March 7. The outage will affect the area between North Street and 13th Street and is expected to last no more than 15 minutes. We will send reminders to residents of the affected area as March 7 approaches. I have two reminders about road closings next week. All lanes of the 34th Street Bridge will be closed overnight from 10 p.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Tuesday. The bridge will reopen on Tuesday but then close again from 10 p.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m. Wednesday. The contractors for this Cape May County redecking project are in the final phases of work that should be complete by the first week of May. Please seek alternative routes if you’re traveling overnight on Monday or Tuesday. New Jersey American Water will be working to install a new main along Eighth Street starting on Monday. Work will take place between Bay Avenue and Asbury Avenue. The work will require lane closings and potential detours as it proceeds. Warm regards, Jay A. Gillian Mayor
