Mayor's Update 5-27-16

  • News
Dear Friends, Memorial Day Weekend is finally here. We’re looking at a warm and sunny start to the weekend, and everybody’s thoughts will start to turn to summer fun. We “unlocked” the ocean this afternoon, so let the season begin. Please bear in mind that construction projects continue on roads leading to Ocean City, including at the Atlantic City Expressway interchange with the southbound Garden State Parkway and at the parkway bridge over Great Egg Harbor Bay. Detours will be in effect on back roads like Route 50 in Tuckahoe and Somers Point-Mays Landing Road (Rt. 559). I ask everybody to be patient in their travels and to respect crosswalk and other laws as more drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians begin to share the roads in Ocean City with the coming season. Members of the city team met with the South Jersey Gas Company officials this week, and I gave them the go-ahead to begin replacing gas mains from the area of Eighth Street and Ninth Street and Atlantic Avenue to the boardwalk. Work will begin after the holiday weekend and last until mid-June. This work will help the city get a quick start in the fall on a project to replace the boardwalk between Eighth Street and 10th
Street – including the stretch in front of the Ocean City Music Pier. The spring weather delayed other road projects in Ocean City, but work is expected to be complete by mid-June after taking a break for the holiday weekend. The fourth annual Memorial Beach Challenge is on schedule with races beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. If you’ve never had a chance to watch the event, it’s worth a look – with participants navigating a grueling obstacle course on the beach and others racing on paddleboards in the ocean. It’s all for a great cause to raise money for service members, veterans and their families. Finally, I urge you all to take time from your busy weekend to attend our annual Memorial Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday at Veterans Memorial Park (500 block of  Wesley Avenue). The event is always well-attended as the community recognizes the sacrifices made by the men and women of our military. Warm regards, Jay A.
