Dear Friends, I’m happy to report that the Ocean City Boardwalk is back open from end to end. Our contractor finished work yesterday, a week ahead of schedule. Runners and bicyclists are no longer being detoured around the project area between Plaza Place and Eighth Street, and the boards will be ready for a full schedule of spring events. Work started Monday on a drainage project in the area between 14th Street and 16th Street near the bay, and a paving project for six alleys is scheduled to begin this Monday. A town hall meeting to update neighbors and the public on a major drainage project from 26th Street to 34th Street between West Avenue and Bay Avenue is still tentatively scheduled for later this month, and we’re working to confirm a date with the engineering firm designing the project. Anybody interested in the progress of any of our capital projects can follow updates at ocnj.us/projects. You can also sign up for email updates on the “Alert Me” page at ocnj.us. The Night in Venice Committee – including new Event Coordinator Michael Hartman – has been working hard to plan a great event for this summer. The annual bayfront celebration will be held July 16, and this year will include a fireworks display, an optional “Destination America” theme that celebrates culture and regional pride from our country’s great cities and landmarks, and a new “Collegiate Cup” division. I’m confident that this year’s event will be a great one. Lastly, I’d like to congratulate all of Ocean City High School’s highly successful winter sports programs. In particular, the girls basketball team recently won their sixth South Jersey title, and the girls swim team won a state championship by knocking off Chatham, a team that had won 103 straight meets and five consecutive state titles. Warm regards, Jay A. Gillian Mayor
