Mayor's Update 6-17

  • News
Dear Friends, Some of you may have noticed that the lights along the Route 52 causeway bridges have been lit in rainbow colors this week. Our hearts and prayers go out to the families and friends of all those who died in the Orlando attack on Sunday. The lights are a small gesture and only symbolic. But I think it’s important to show that we stand in solidarity with the LGBT community and with all Americans threatened by terror. The bridges will remain in rainbow colors until Sunday as we mourn those lost in this tragedy. The city team and Habitat for Humanity Cape May County will hold a public meeting 6 p.m. Thursday, June 30, at the Senior Center to discuss an opportunity for the city to meet part of its affordable housing obligation. Habitat for Humanity could help bring new homes to city-owned properties on the 200 block of Haven Avenue and the 200 block of Simpson Avenue. The potential project could help make the dream of home ownership come true for deserving local families. I encourage you all to attend the meeting to learn more about the proposal. The Ocean City Pops opens its 2016 season on Sunday with Deana Martin as guest. The Pops has a great lineup, and I hope you’ll all have a chance this summer to see some shows. The Pops is a true community asset for Ocean City. On Monday, the Indigo Girls open the Monday night concert series on the Ocean City Music Pier. Once again, promoter Bob Rose has put together an exceptional set of shows. The Beach Boys, George Thorogood, the Bacon Brothers, Colin Hay of Men at Work, and Lucinda Williams are all part of the series. Tickets are available 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily at the Music Pier Box Office, at the Welcome Centers at City Hall and the Route 52 causeway, by phone at (609) 399-6111 or online at ocnj.us/boxoffice (for Pops tickets) or ticketmaster.com  (for the Monday night series). Summer officially starts on Monday, and it always flies by too quickly. So I hope you all take the time to make the most of it this year. Warm regards, Jay A.
