OCGCA1.4 On Saturday morning while many prepared to hit the beach, the Ocean City Gardens Civic Associate held a service to honor our Ocean City Veterans.  The event was highlighted by the dedication of a bronze plaque, located near the foot of the Longport Bridge, honoring all those who have served in the Armed Forces. The sun was shining and a brisk wind whipped across the entrance to Ocean City setting the stage for a memorable event.  Approximately 50 people attended the ceremony. Many in the crowd were veterans themselves and members of our local VFW and American Legion.  Others were there out of respect for the great sacrifices endured by our military personnel. OCGCA President Patricia Watts brought the event to order and introduced local prodigy Julia Wilson, who delivered a stirring rendition of our National Anthem. Mayor Jay Gillian warmed the crowd with his presence and unwavering support for our veterans, and Pastor Matt Stokes of Coastal Christian Church connected with the audience with a passionate talk about the love of one’s county and what our flag stands for here and around the world. Ambassador William J. Hughes spoke to the audience about the great sacrifices that our soldiers have made for all of us.  He encouraged our politicians to embrace a greater sense of civility towards one another. Councilman Michael DeVlieger thanked all of those who are currently serving or have served and their families. He also thanked the Ocean City Garden Civic Association for creating a beautiful entrance to Ocean City to honor our Veterans. Finally, the OCGCA introduced its board members:
  • President: Patt Watts
  • First Vice President: Debbie McKenna
  • Interim Recording Secretary: Rich Bennett
  • Corrresponding Secretary: Rich Bennett
  • Treasurer: Duane Sonneborn
  • Assistant Treasurer: Sally Raslavich
The moving and respectful event closed with Julia Wilson singing a version "God Bless America" that would have made Kate Smith proud. OCGCA2.4
