WHEN: Saturday, July 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
WHERE: At the Ocean City Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace
Opening ceremonies will be held starting 10 a.m. in front of the Ocean City Music Pier when Mayor Jay Gillian of Ocean City and Consul General Mario de Leon of the Philippine Consul General’s Office in New York discuss the sister-city relationship between the communities and greet visitors.
This will be followed by approximately three hours of free entertainment on the Boardwalk featuring Philippine folk dancers performing exciting routines as they dodge clacking wooden poles. Internationally recognized vocalist Rene Sese, the reigning Mr. Mature America, will also perform.
There will be yo-yo demonstrations by Air Circus led by Doug Jewell and a team of talented performers. The yo-yo was invented in the Philippines and translates as “Return! Return!”
At approximately noon, American music will be featured when Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame drummer Dick Richards performs with his Ready Rockers. Richards was the original drummer of Bill Haley’s Comets and recorded “Rock Around the Clock” with the band when they scored the original music to the movie “Black Board Jungle.” He also acted in movie and TV dramas. At 92, his energy remains amazing.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the loggia (porch) of the Music Pier, there will be displays of crafts, foods, goods and services from the Philippines. Filipino nurses will offer free blood pressure tests. The Ocean City Aquatic and Fitness Center will demonstrate health-related exercises and there will be many specialized displays.
Inside the Music Pier, the state’s Regional Yo Yo Championships will be held all day with the finals set for 8 p.m. Admission is free to see the talented competitors in action and the winners crowned.
