Volunteers are encouraged to clean up different parts of the city Monday (Jan. 18) during the annual Day of Service honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The event takes place 9 a.m. to noon. Signups and cleanup supplies distribution will take place in the Senior Center at the Ocean City Community Center (18th Street and Simpson Avenue) at any time during the event. Volunteers are encouraged to return to the Senior Center for a complimentary lunch after the cleanup. The event honors the spirit of community service taught by King. That spirit is reflected nationwide on Martin Luther King Day as Americans are encouraged to participate in a day of service — “a day on, not a day off.” “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’ ” King said. In Ocean City, the volunteer effort saw about double the number of participants last year than it did on a bitter cold Martin Luther King Day in 2014. More than 170 people volunteered in 2015. The forecast for Monday calls for blustery but sunny weather with a high of 30 degrees.
