Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebrations Begin Saturday

Ocean City High School A program honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be held at Ocean City High School's Performing Arts Center at 1.pm on Jan. 16.  The annual celebration of the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will begin at 1 p.m. on Jan. 16 at the Hughes Performing Arts Center of the Ocean City High School. 
City Business Administrator Jim Mallon will introduce the program. Music will be performed by St. Paul Baptist Church. There will be a performance by the Spirit of Light Praise Team of Christ Care Baptist Church.  Rev. Stephen Donat of St. Peter’s United Methodist Church will read scripture and Rev. Anna Livingston of Shiloh Baptist Church will make an invocation. Mayor Jay A. Gillian and elected officials will speak in the program. Ocean City Intermediate School essay winners will read reflections.  There will be a soul food dinner after the program. This year will mark the 26th year of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebrations in the county. Intermediate school teacher Rozelia Cobb was the first to organize a birthday celebration. She believed that Dr. King's message of peace and equality were important ideas to pass on and always included young people in her celebrations. There will be the opportunity to honor Dr. King's legacy through service on Monday. See details on this event and information on other upcoming events below:
  • Jan. 16 — Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration: held at Hughes Performing Arts Center, Ocean City High School (6th and Atlantic Ave.) It will feature Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream Speech”  at 1 p.m. A “Soul Food” Dinner immediately follows the ceremony.
  • Jan. 18 — Day of Service: City-Wide Cleanup honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Volunteers meet at 9 a.m. at the Senior Center (18th and Simpson Ave.) Volunteers are invited back to the Senior Center for food and warm beverages after.
  • Jan. 20 — Chanteuse Concert: Women’s quartet will perform standards at 7 p.m. in the Ocean City Free Public Library’s Chris Maloney Lecture Hall. Admission is free.
  • Jan. 23 — Afternoon Movies: featuring “Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation” at 2 p.m. at the Community Center (17th and Simpson Ave.)
  • Jan. 24 — “Four Bassists at Play”:  Andy Lalasis and three other musicians will play original and inspiring music on acoustic, electric and synthesized instruments at 2 p.m. at the Community Center.
  • Jan. 30 –  National Croissant Day Cooking Class: 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Senior Room kitchen at the Community Center ( 17th and Simpson Ave.)
  • March 12 — Third Annual Mr. Mature America Pageant: talent pageant for men 55 years of age and older. Contestants compete in talent, interview and poise categories.
