Deedra Bown
It didn’t take Deedra Bowen long to realize the Ocean City Board of Realtors and the city had a winner on its hands last December at its first homeowners’ seminar.
“I would have been happy if 20 people showed up,” said Bowen, a vice president and Jersey Shore Rental Manager with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services in town. “We put it together fairly late, and knew that many people had already left for Florida or had other plans. As it turned out we had over 100 and had to bring in extra chairs.”
Well, this time around, the organizers are thinking big and have a big venue, the Ocean City Music Pier on the Boardwalk at Moorlyn Terrace. The Spring Seminar entitled “Preparing for Summer” is for homeowners, rental property owners and second homeowners. As the name implies, much information will be provided to help attendees to be ready when the spring and summer season kicks into full gear.
The event, which is free and open to the public, is co-sponsored by The McMahon Insurance Agency, Inc., 2131 Asbury Ave., and Thomas H. Heist Insurance Agency, 70 West Ave. Those wishing to attend are asked to RSVP by April 22 to

“The last one was so well received, we plan on doing a fall and spring seminar annually,” Deedra said. Some of the planned highlights:
*The Ocean City Fire Department and Police Department will be on hand, she said, offering safety tips on fire prevention and property safety, respectively.
*Comfort Now, a locally-based plumbing, heating and cooling company, will make a presentation on how to get the most out of your plumbing and air conditioning unit.
*Tri-County Pest Control will show homeowners how to rid their properties of pesky ants and other summer pests.
* The Ocean City Board of Realtors’ Rental Task Force will provide hints and tips on how to get the most out of your Ocean City or other shore town property.
Additional, the two co-sponsoring insurance agencies will discuss all aspects of insurance for homeowners, be it flood insurance, condo insurance or rental coverage.
“This is a great event,” said Bill McMahon of the McMahon Agency. “The last one had a packed house at the Community Center and this one promises to be even better.”
He said second homeowners will find the event especially useful. “(People whose primary homes are not local) might not know who’s who or what to look for, and here is an opportunity to speak with a number of them all in one place.”
He said from an insurance standpoint many homeowners “put the policy in a drawer and don’t always pay attention to it. Here is a chance to know what you are paying for and get an insurance policy ‘tune-up’ if you need it.”
The event will also include a wide-ranging question and answer session. Vendor tables offering information and more in-depth one-on-one advice from the presenting organizations will be set up as well.
“This event is really for any homeowner,” Bowen said. For more information on the seminar, contact her at 609-399-2402 or
