Council Agenda: Pick New VP ... Road Across Marshes?

  • News
City Hall in Ocean City City Council on Thursday will choose a new vice president to replace Michael Allegretto, who resigned last week when he was appointed as the city's new director of Community Services. Council will nominate candidates from among the six remaining members to serve as vice president. Council President Keith Hartzell said council will have a separate public discussion on Thursday about options and processes for filling Allegretto's seat on the seven-member council. Council can make an appointment within 30 days or it can leave the seat vacant until the May 2016 election. Read more: Allegretto Appointment Would Leave a Spot Open on City Council. Council meets at 7 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 24) in Council Chambers on the third floor of City Hall. The council agenda (
see full agenda) also includes the following items that may be of interest:
  • Access Road to Site 83: Council will vote to seek bids on construction of a temporary access road across the marshes connecting Roosevelt Boulevard (34th Street) with a site where dredged material can be stored. The site is approved as a disposal site for future projects to deepen shallow lagoons and channels on Ocean City's bay side, but it is filled to capacity. A contractor is currently working to remove material by barge. Read more: Roadway Across Marshes Could Jump Start Bayside Dredging.
  • Yoga in Neighborhood Business Zone: Council will vote on the second and potentially final reading of an ordinance that would permit yoga and dance studios in the Neighborhood Business (NB) Zone. The zone includes parts of West Avenue (between Second and Fourth streets), 55th Street and other small pockets on the island. City Solicitor Dottie McCrosson said the idea behind the ordinance is to “spur some development to preserve business districts.” The first vote on the ordinance included no discussion of any particular yoga studio applicant interested in the zone. The Planning Board has determined the change is consistent with Ocean City's Master Plan.
  • Bulkhead Work: Council will vote to seek bids on replacement and improvement of bulkheads on the bayfront at 11th Street and W. 17th Street. The work will include drainage improvements and paving on the adjacent street areas.
