Park Place is among five beaches that will be unprotected by the Ocean City Beach Patrol through Friday. They will reopen for the holiday weekend before closing for the season.
The Ocean City Department of Fire and Rescue Services announced that five additional beaches will not be guarded by the Ocean City Beach Patrol until the weekend.
The following beaches will be unprotected through Friday, but they will reopen for Saturday, Sunday and Monday (Sept. 5 to 7) before closing for the season:
- Park Place
- Fifth Street
- 32nd Street
- 36th Street
- 42nd Street
The OCBP announced last week that 11 beaches were closed for the season starting Aug. 24.
With many students returning to classes before Labor Day (which falls on the latest possible date this year, Sept. 7), the OCBP does not have the manpower to fully staff its beaches. The beach patrol offers incentive pay for guards to finish out the season through Labor Day, but that’s not a possibility for some high school and college students or teachers.
The following beaches are closed:
- Waverly Blvd.
- Atlantic Blvd.
- 13th Street
- 16th Street (Surfing Beach)
- 17th Street
- 20th Street
- 28th Street
- 46th Street
- 48th Street
- 53rd Street
- 60th Street
With 55th Street Beach closed for beach replenishment project work, the only beaches south of 34th Street with lifeguard protection are 39th Street, 44th Street, 50th Street and 58th Street.
Twenty-six other beaches remain protected 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekends and Labor Day. Guarded beaches include:
- Seaspray Road
- Surf Road
