A six-member team from the Delaware Valley Surf Anglers’ A team and the Fish ‘N Fun team tied for first place in Ocean City Fishing Club’s 48
th annual Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 17.
Competitors in the Surf Fishing Tournament in Ocean City on Saturday enjoyed bright sunshine and glassy calm seas.
Both teams had a total of 25 points, based on the lengths of fish caught. Runner-up was the Merchantville Fishing Club’s A team with 15 points.
On a day with flat seas, moderate wind, and a mostly incoming tide, the tournament attracted 32 teams and 24 individuals competing for trophies and bragging rights.
Taking home a trophy for catching the largest fish among men anglers was Anthony Meduli, with a 15.75-inch American shad. His counterpart was Jane Jeffreys, who landed a 12-inch kingfish and also won a trophy for the most points for a woman.
Rich Bergman, of Fish ‘N Fuzz, had the most fish points in the men’s category.
Two youngsters from the Brigantine Sharks team, Devin Wiest and Chase Kephart, won recognition for catching the most fish and the largest fish in their age categories.
Co-sponsored by the Ocean City Department of Recreation, the tournament is under the aegis of the Association of Surf Angling Clubs.
Ocean City Fishing Club past president Kieth Van Laarhoven and trustee Bob Dever co-chaired the event. Registration was handled by Frank Pizzutilla, Claudia Carris, and Dan Ladik. Club secretary Margaret Feil, of Ocean View, was in charge of food service before and after the tournament at the Ocean City Intermediate School.
