Mel Bennett, a teacher, will be the first 6’7” turkey ever to wander the halls of the school on Wednesday. The Intermediate School's Student Council hosted a fundraiser last week to benefit the Community Food Bank of New Jersey during the holiday season by "dressing a teacher like a turkey." Most kids might only dream of seeing their teacher dressed up like a turkey, but on Wednesday, Mr. Bennett will make the dream a reality. Each day during the fundraiser, students could buy feathers to put on participating teachers' paper turkeys during homeroom and lunches. Mr. Bennett was announced as the winner on Nov. 20 with a grand total of more than 3,000 feathers purchased. Participation had been outstanding throughout the wee,k and the students enjoyed the competition to put their favorite teacher on top. Students could purchase one feather for a quarter and five feathers for a dollar. The money collected will go to benefit families in need this holiday season. “With $1,315 collected, the fundraiser has proved to be a smashing success,” Intermediate School Principal Geoffrey Haines said. “It has been a great experience for both the students and faculty and we hope to continue the tradition next year as well.” — News release from the Ocean City School District
