Ocean City's First 'Fitness Week' Starts on Monday

  • Things To Do
Surfset classes will be one of the unique offerings of Fitness Week in Ocean City Nov. 16 to 22, 2015. Ocean City's first "Fitness Week" is set for Nov. 16 to 22 at locations throughout the island. The purpose of the event is to highlight the many facilities Ocean City offers to help people stay in shape. Fitness cards good for up to five different sessions are on sale now for $20 at the Ocean City Aquatics and Fitness Center (17th Street and Simpson Avenue) and online at ocnj.us/recreation. Participants can choose from more than 100 classes at 10 different venues. Classes include yoga, Zumba, Pilates, "Smooth Moves," senior fitness, indoor cycling, martial arts, strength training, squash, Pickleball and line dancing, among a host of other physical and nutritional activities for participants of all ages. Ocean City's newly named Healthy Living Advisory Council (formerly the Advisory Council on Physical Fitness and Sports) created the event, having seen something similar sponsored by the schools a few years ago. But recognizing people's busy lives, the council expanded the event to a week long. "We wanted to be able to go with anybody's schedule," council member Ashley McGuigan said.
Fitness Week includes free events, including Meditation and Mindfulness (6:30 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Ocean City Free Public Library); Healthy Eating Choices for Kids (6:30 p.m. Nov. 17 at the library); Cancer Prevention Seminar (6:30 p.m. Nov. 18 at the library); Healthy Eating for the Holidays (2 p.m. Nov. 20 at Shores of Wesley Manor); and a Holiday Cooking Demonstration (10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Nov. 22 at the Senior Center). Mayor Jay Gillian will assist chef Annemarie Chelius in the 1 p.m. cooking demonstration on Nov. 22. One highlight will be a Nov. 20 tournament pitting different community organizations against each other in adult kickball. The competition will include showdowns between the Ocean City Police Department and Ocean City Fire Department, Johnson's Popcorn and 7th Street Surf Shop, and the Ocean City Exchange Club and a team led by Councilman Antwan McClellan. "What better Friday night event?" McGuigan said.
