Ocean City's 43rd Annual Flower Show Opens Friday

  • Things To Do
The following news release is from Ocean City Public Relations Director Mark Soifer:
The free Ocean City Flower Show runs Friday through Sunday (May 29 to 31) on the Ocean City Music Pier in Ocean City, NJ. When Ocean City initiates a good event, we stick with it! This is true of the Baby Parade (more than 100 years old), Night In Venice, the Antique Auto Show and Boardwalk Art Show (over 50), Martin Z. Mollusk Day (age 44), the Block Parties (in the mid 30s), the Doo Dah Parade (30) and First Night (in its 20s).
We are fortunate to have a corps of volunteers who have worked diligently to make these and other events a success. The Ocean City Flower Show (May 29 to 31) is an example of how a good idea turned into a durable and appreciated festival. Show times at the Ocean City Music Pier (Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace) are Friday 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.Saturday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Entry to the public is free. Optional donations are taken to support the show. There is a trade fair with flower show products for sale in the pavilion of the Music Pier during the three-day event. It was suggested by the late James F. Penland, a talented artist and Ocean City businessman, who owned and operated the Connoisseur Shops on the Boardwalk and later in the downtown. Jim and Dr. Marcia Smith had started the Boardwalk Art Show in the mid '60s with the help of Mayor B. Thomas Waldman. Jim convinced the Ocean City Garden Club to organize and present the Flower Show. He also secured the support of Mayor Waldman, who agreed to provide the Music Pier as the venue and underwrite the show. The rest, as they say, is history. The Flower Show has become a popular event attracting hundreds to Ocean City. Theme for this year's exhibition is "Chic to Chic, Flowers and Fashion." Categories in the Artistic Design Division feature such classes as "Bling" and "String of Pearls." There is a Horticultural Division with exhibits of Roses, African Violets, Orchids, etc. The competition features the work of non-professional garden enthusiasts and is always very impressive.
