The pipeline that will deliver the first sand to the southern end of Ocean City in a massive beach replenishment project has landed just south of 42nd Street.
A massive project to rebuild eroded beaches between 36th and 59th streets in Ocean City is on schedule to be completed between May and August.
Staging work will continue for another month and pumping is expected to begin in May.
The work will involve pumping sand from the ocean floor off the coast through a pipeline to the beach in Ocean City. Heavy equipment will contour the slope of the replenished beach and build dunes.
For south-end owners worried about protecting their properties and for beachgoers squeezed by disappearing beaches at high tide, the project is long-awaited. But the project will disrupt the summer vacation season as it proceeds down the beach in increments.
Check here for regular updates and photos of the progress of work. When the dredging starts, we'll provide daily updates, including which beaches are closed.
DATE: Wednesday, March 25
PROGRESS: The pipeline for the first stage of the project has landed just south of 42nd Street. (The originally announced plans called for the work to start at 41st Street.)
WHAT'S NEXT: Staging work will continue for another month. The sand-pumping is expected to begin in early May. City officials are expected to attend a work update meeting on Thursday (March 26), and Army Corps of Engineers are expected to provide an update at a public City Council Meeting on April 9.
