Mayor Jay Gillian: City Will Build Pickleball Courts

  • News
The following is Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian’s weekly update to citizens
 posted on Friday, June 26.
Lines for five crude Pickleball courts are painted on asphalt beside the Ocean City Intermediate School. The city sought bids for resurfacing those courts and for building five more on city-owned property on Shelter Road. Dear Friends: Last night, several members of Ocean City’s Pickleball community attended the City Council meeting. I would like to thank them for participating in the meeting and for their many e-mails to me and City Council. I want to be very clear to everyone that the city will be building permanent Pickleball courts for the community. Unfortunately, the city received only one bid for the construction work and it exceeded the estimated cost by more than double. If the bid had not been so high, we would have awarded the contract last night and moved toward starting construction. City Council and I want to provide our community the best recreational facilities possible and both pickleball and tennis facilities are key projects for this year. A reminder that tomorrow Michele and I will be guests at the Ocean City Community Association (OCCA) meeting at 11:30 a.m. at the Howard S. Stainton Senior Center. Following the OCCA meeting, we will hold a town hall meeting at 1:00 p.m. on back bay dredging, also in the senior center. I hope all of you can attend one or both of the meetings. Following the town hall meeting, the presentation will be available on the City website at www.ocnj.us/MAYOR. Have a wonderful weekend! Warm regards, Jay A. Gillian Mayor
