Mayor Jay Gillian: Beach Project Could Restart as Early as Monday

  • News
The Liberty Island, a hopper dredge, pumps sand from its hold into a pipeline feeding the beachfill project that will rebuild beaches between 36th and 59th streets in Ocean City, NJ. The following is Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian’s weekly update to citizens posted on Friday, July 17. Dear Friends: We received a positive update this week on the beach replenishment project in the south end of Ocean City.  The dredge “Liberty Island” is expected to sail from Norfolk on Sunday, July 19 and resume beach replenishment operations as early as Monday, July 20. The contractor has begun to replace pipe and other equipment on the beach already and will continue to do so this weekend.  The contractor will pump from where they left off near 52nd
Street, north to near 47th Street. The contractor will then pump from 55th Street south to 59th Street. At a City Council workshop last night, we had a positive meeting regarding the Historic District. I would like to thank Council for arranging this meeting.  I would also like to thank the Historic Preservation Commission and all who attended.  There were some excellent suggestions for ways to enhance the district and to create incentives for homeowners to make improvements.  The administration, City Council and the Historic Preservation Commission will continue to discuss these suggestions in the coming weeks. I hope everyone has a great weekend. Warm regards, Jay A. Gillian Mayor
