The Rev. Gregory Johnson
The following is Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian’s
weekly update to citizens posted on Friday, Jan. 9.
Dear Friends:
Next weekend, Ocean City will hold its 25th annual celebration to honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The program will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17 in the Hughes Performing Arts Center at Ocean City High School. You can look forward to a meaningful tribute with music, history and fellowship. Reverend Gregory Johnson will once again recite Dr. King’s “I have a dream” speech.
The program will be followed by a delicious Soul Food Dinner in the school cafeteria. This memorable meal will be prepared by members of Shiloh Baptist and Macedonia United Methodist Churches. Donations will be accepted.
On Monday, Jan. 19, there will be a day of service honoring Dr. King from 9 a.m. until noon. Groups of volunteers will undertake a community wide clean-up. Participants can sign up and gather supplies at the Stainton Senior Center within the Community Center at 18thStreet and Simpson Avenue. Lunch will be served following the clean-up.
I would like to thank Councilman Antwan McClellan and Councilman Keith Hartzell for their committed efforts to publicize these events and boost participation.
We should all take pride in the fact that Ocean City was the first community in Cape May County to honor Dr. King with events such as these.
I look forward to seeing you at these programs.
Warm regards,
Jay A. Gillian
Mayor
