The concrete substructure of the Ocean City Boardwalk lies in shambles in a project area between Plaza Place and Eighth Street on Wednesday, Dec. 2.
The Ocean City Boardwalk reconstruction project continues to make good progress — with most of the concrete substructure in a project area between Plaza Place and Eighth Street now demolished.
The concrete substructure will be replaced by wooden pilings and stringers before new decking is placed.
A narrow strip of substructure along the storefronts and above utility lines remains to be removed.
The work is part of a project to rebuild a block and a half of the boardwalk.
Crews from Walters Marine Construction started work in the week after Columbus Day and face a mid-March deadline as the start of Ocean City’s spring events season starts early this year — with Easter falling on March 27.
The work is part of the third phase of a multi-year reconstruction project that will replace the boardwalk between Fifth Street and 12th Street.
A subcontractor reportedly has completed off-site construction of new sections of boardwalk decking, which can be transported and assembled after new pilings are driven.
Runners, pedestrians and cyclists are being detoured off the Boardwalk at Sixth Street and Eighth Street as work continues.
