A "blue moon" rises over Ocean City, NJ on July 31, 2015.

A unique excursion on Friday showcased a spectacular sunset and a blue moon — a phenomenon that happens every few years when the second of two full moons appears in the same calendar month.
Bay Cats sponsored a Sunset Moonrise Paddle with about 30 standup paddleboarders and kayakers setting out from the shop on the 300 block of Bay Avenue for a leisurely loop under the Ninth Street Bridge and back.
The weather cooperated with the sun setting and the moon rising into a clear warm sky. The event also provided an opportunity for the paddlers to take in the natural beauty of Ocean City's bayfront. See sequence of photos above.
