Ocean City Beach Patrol lifeguards typically work into the third week of September, but the number of patrolled beaches might be further decreased after Sept. 14.
The ocean water temperature was 73 degrees on Monday (Sept. 8), and there were no named tropical storms in the Atlantic basin. September is the most common month for hurricanes and the rough surf that accompanies them.
