Surf From Hurricane Gonzalo to Hit Friday and Saturday

  • Things To Do
The track for Hurricane Gonzalo takes the storm over the open water of the Atlantic Ocean as a Category 3 (winds of at least 111 mph) storm, sending good surf to Ocean City on Friday and Saturday. A major hurricane is on a collision course with Bermuda, and while the distant storm is not expected to come anywhere close to Ocean City, it will send big surf that is expected to arrive on Friday and Saturday. Hurricane Gonzalo became the first Category 4 hurricane (sustained winds of 130 mph) in the Atlantic Ocean since Ophelia in 2011. But the storm weakened slightly on Wednesday and moved to Category 3 with sustained winds of 125 mph. Gonzalo is on a track that will take it near Bermuda on Friday afternoon then northward over the open water of the Atlantic Ocean on Saturday and Sunday. Surf forecasts call for the swell to build through Friday and peak with overhead waves on Saturday. Local winds will be offshore (west) creating clean conditions on Friday. The marine forecast calls for southwest winds on Saturday. The ocean water temperature is 66 degrees, and high tides will be late afternoon on Friday and Saturday. __________
