The HERO campaign promotes the use of designated drivers, and the annual event raises tens of thousands of dollars toward the effort. The HERO Campaign was organized 14 years ago by William and Muriel Elliott whose son, John, was tragically killed by a drunk driver. Their program already has been adopted by several states, and the Elliott’s goal is to have every state in the country adopt life-saving, designated driver legislation. The fundraising goal for Sunday’s event was $100,000. This year, the Hero Walk provided photo booths and frames on site so that participants taking the “Hero pledge” could post their photos on the Foundation’s Facebook page, Instagram and their own social media.
