Ocean City devotees took a fall this morning in the resort's annual tribute to the coming fall: The King and Queen of Plop Contest.
The contest invites "celebrity" ploppers and "amateur" contestants to
welcome the fall season by performing artistic, slow-motion falls on the beach. The contestants compete for trophies and the esteemed honor of carrying the King or Queen of Plop title throughout the year.
The light-hearted event is a staple of the last weekend of the traditional summer season in Ocean City and falls on the Friday before Labor Day Weekend.
After much drama, flying sand and falling bodies, the new Kings and Queens of Plop are:
Kings of Plop: Marco DeCrescenzo, 7, who teamed up with family members Gia DeCrescenzo, 9, and Luca DeCrescenzo, of Cedar Knolls, N.J., and Hannah Mullin, 11, in a collective boogie board wipeout.
Queens of Plop: Sophia Whelan, 8, and Olivia Cook, 10, of Ocean City, repeated as Queens of Plop with a gymnastic, back-bending routine that came to a crashing end.
Video of the event is above and a gallery of images is below.
