Ocean City's annual "Weird Week" — in which kids and adults are encouraged to play with their food — kicked off Monday with a Saltwater Taffy Sculpting Contest sponsored by Shriver's.
Everybody is invited to participate in a week of free, family-oriented contests. The fun continues on Tuesday with French Fry Sculpting.
All contests are held at the Ocean City Music Pier (Boardwalk at Moorlyn Terrace) and start at 11 a.m.
Ocean City’s Weird Contest Week has been held for more than 40 years has invited folks of all ages to exercise their creative skills. The event, billed as “Wacky But Not Tacky,” features six unusual contests between Aug. 11 and 15.
The remaining schedule is as follows:
Tuesday: French fries are sculpted into objects of art. Entries have included Elvis, seagulls, a replica of the State of New Jersey and road signs. This event is sponsored by the Promenade on the Boardwalk.
Wednesday: It’s "That’s the Way the Cookie Crumbles." Giant cookies are chewed and thumbed into whatever. The day also includes “Ears Looking At You,” a contest for competitive ear wigglers.
Thursday: "Beadamania" is scheduled. Weird Weekers make bracelets and necklaces from beads provided by the Potomac Bead Company. This is a non-competitive happening. Participants take their beady treasures home as prizes.
Friday: There are two events: Miss Miscellaneous and Mr. Miscellaneous for anyone who has ever wanted to be in a talent contest but perhaps missed the bus or got detained at a rugby game; then there’s Little Miss and Little Mister Chaos for Children 3 to 5 years of age. The tots are given pots and pans to bang on for three minutes. The ones who create the most noise are declared winners after the chaos subsides.
The sculpting contests are divided into age groups, 5 and under, 6-8, 9-12, teens and adults. Prizes are awarded. Also: Taffy, French Fries and Cookies used in contest may contain peanuts and other allergens. For information, call (609) 525-9300.
