Supporters of the Ocean City High School surfing team are encouraging anybody to clean out closets and empty garages as part of a used clothing drive this weekend to raise money to help send the team to the National Scholastic Surfing Association championship June 14 to 16 in Dana Point, Calif.
The drive will accept men’s, women’s and children's clothing, handbags, shoes, belts, linens, curtains, tablecloths, hard toys and stuffed animals.
Dropoff is at the Ocean City Fire Department (Sixth Street and West Avenue, Door No. 4) from noon to 5 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday (April 26 and 27). Place items in plastic garbage bags. Books, CDs or VHS tapes will not be accepted.
Ocean City finished third in Northeast Regional competition on Nov. 3 to advance to the nationals. The Red Raiders had won the regional for 16 years in a row and for 23 of the past 25 years. The high school competition format includes categories for short boards, long boards and women.
Tickets also are on sale for a fundraiser 6 to 9 p.m. May 10 at DiOrio's in Somers Point. Team members are selling tickets ($25 for food and drink) for adults. Student tickets ($15) can be purchased at the door.
