Few understand the trials and tribulations of working in obstetrics and gynecology as well as Dr. Chike Aguh, gynecologist. After more than 35 years of service as a physician, Dr. Aguh's career speaks for itself. Today, the 64-year-old OB/GYN has spent more than half his life pursuing the study and provision of women's healthcare. To gain true insight into the shape of his career, however, one must naturally go back to his roots.

The Path to Obstetrics

Chike Aguh, M.D’s foray into the world of health sciences began in 1974, when he first achieved admission to the University of Texas at Austin. Upon receiving his bachelor's in biochemistry, he studied at St. George's University School of Medicine until 1983 to earn his medical degree. From there, it was time to start putting his acquired knowledge into action. After moving back to the United States, Chike Aguh, M.D. completed a two-year internship at the University of Medicine and Dentistry in Newark, New Jersey. This led to a longer residency, during which he switched gears toward a specialty in pediatric medicine. However, Dr. Aguh's pediatric specialty immersed him into the world of neonatal care, in which he acquired a passion for the relevant specialties of obstetrics and gynecology. From 1986 to 1990, he pursued a new residency position as an OB/GYN. He never turned back and has been working to provide women with quality healthcare ever since.

Chike Aguh's Work as Obstetric Gynecologist

After completing his residency in 1990, Chike Aguh, M.D. split the bulk of his time between two women's healthcare facilities. Not only did he work out of his own private practice for more than 30 years, but he also helped establish the Plainfield Neighborhood Health Center, an affordable care clinic where he acted as co-director of OB/GYN services until 1993. As Dr. Aguh spent the next few decades as one of the 85.4% of Nigerian American physicians working in public healthcare, he developed numerous targeted specialties. Just a few of his primary qualifications as an OB/GYN include:
  • Pelvic ultrasonography
  • Myomectomy
  • Colposcopy
  • Laparoscopy
  • Minimally invasive robotic surgery
  • Management of high-risk patients
  • Operative vaginal delivery
Apart from bringing these skills to numerous clinics in the New Jersey area, Chike Aguh, M.D. also works to educate younger OB/GYN residents through both paid positions and volunteer faculty positions, having collaborated with such institutions as St. Peter's University and Rutgers University Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Because of his immigration to the United States from Nigeria, a country with only one practicing doctor for every 10,000 or more patients in need, he understands all too well the vital role that physicians can play in bettering the lives of the less fortunate. In addition to educating future healthcare professionals, he also works to help the impoverished more directly. Prior to the recent outbreak of COVID-19, much of Dr. Aguh's work with impoverished Nigerians took the form of medical missions to provide free healthcare overseas. While several of his colleagues assisted in these efforts, Dr. Aguh bore a great deal of the grunt work in organizing these missions himself. Chike Aguh, M.D. also works with numerous charities that focus their efforts primarily on Nigeria. He sat on the board for Songhai Charities, a Nigerian non-profit based in his current home state of New Jersey. He was also the previous vice chairman for the New Jersey chapter of the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas, or ANPA. When not working behind the scenes to educate students or assist charitable organizations, Dr. Aguh works to provide low-income women with hands-on service and thorough examination with complete and total dedication.

Conclusion

Dr. Chike Aguh's career as a gynecologist has taken him from the hallowed halls of American academia to the streets of Nigeria's most impoverished areas. He has worked not only to provide women with hands-on OB/GYN services, but also to extend healthcare to those in need on the other side of the Atlantic as well as those struggling to afford medical services in the United States.
