Cape May County on Tuesday reported two more deaths and eight new cases of the coronavirus.

The new deaths included a 57-year-old man and a 62-year-old man from Woodbine, according to a press release.

“Our thoughts are with the families,” Cape May County Freeholder Jeff Pierson said. “We know certain people are at higher risk of severe illness or death from COVID-19 including older adults and people who have serious chronic medical conditions.”

Altogether, Cape May County has had 27 deaths and 379 cases of the coronavirus. Nineteen of the deaths have been residents at long-term care living facilities, the county reported.

Disability alone may not be related to higher risk for getting COVID-19 or having severe illness. Most people with disabilities are not inherently at higher risk for becoming infected with or having severe illness from COVID-19.  However, some people with disabilities might be at a higher risk of infection or severe illness because of their underlying medical conditions.

All people seem to be at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19 if they have serious underlying chronic medical conditions like chronic lung disease, a serious heart condition, or a weakened immune system. Adults with disabilities are three times more likely than adults without disabilities to have heart disease, stroke, diabetes, or cancer than adults without disabilities, according to the press release.

Call your healthcare professional if you have concerns about COVID-19 and your underlying health conditions. Stay up to date on the coronavirus crisis as it evolves.
