Ocean City High School’s Student Coalition Against Tobacco (SCAT) celebrated a “Smoke Free in OC” event at Ocean City Intermediate School last week.

“Smoke Free in OC” is an extension of Project 1200 from the fall. With Project 1200, the student group worked with the Mayor’s Advisory Council on Physical Fitness and Sports to create a public awareness demonstration featuring 1,200 pinwheels that represented the 1,200 lives lost each day to tobacco use.

The spring project focused on “clean air.” Students planted flowers representing a tobacco-free lifestyle and in celebration of Earth Day. They planted flowers in the shape of the letter O-C-I-S. “Smoke Free in OC” was organized by high school health and physical education teacher Katie Kline with SCAT, Tom Gahr at the Intermediate School, and Deb Cathcart, advisor for Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD).
