The public is invited to a meeting on Wednesday to learn more about and to provide feedback on plans to build a skateboard park on city-owned property on the 500 block of Asbury Avenue.
The event is scheduled for 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 5 in the Chris Maloney Lecture Hall at the Ocean City Free Public Library (17th Street and Simpson Avenue). Councilman Michael Allegretto, Councilman Michael DeVlieger and Councilman Antwan McClellan are sponsoring the meeting.
The city in September received a $500,000 Green Acres Cape May County Recreation Grant to create the new park, and the city already has approved a capital plan that calls for spending another $250,000 on the project. Tentative plans call for the construction of a state-of-the-art concrete park, unlike the temporary ramps and rails at a skate park that was dismantled by the city (citing safety concerns) in 2011.
The county money is contingent on using the location specified in the grant application: adjacent to the Ocean City Fire Department in the block between Fifth and Sixth streets, Asbury and West avenues.
Topics to be covered at Wednesday’s meeting include:
- A brief history of the project to date
- A presentation on the options for where the park could be constructed (within the selected block)
- The recommended option
- Features of the latest design for the park
- Next steps for the project
The public will have the opportunity to provide input, and any potential impact on parking and the Ocean City Ecumenical Council charitable Clothes Closet will be among the topics addressed, according to DeVlieger.
He said the county has suggestions on features they’d like to see incorporated into the new design, and those ideas will be shared on Wednesday.
