The Ocean City Police Department will join the statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign with sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols from Dec. 5 to Jan. 2.
Ocean City Police DepartmentThe department received a $7,500 grant from the state Division of Highway Traffic Safety to pay for increased patrols, and City Council will vote Thursday to add the grant to the city budget.
The idea behind the campaign is to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking alcohol and driving through a combination of high visibility enforcement and public education.
“This is a critical law enforcement program that can save lives during a time of the year when impaired driving traditionally increases by nearly 10 percent,” Ocean City Police Chief Chad Callahan said in a news release. “This initiative brings attention to the serious consequences of drunk driving and the grave danger those who choose to drink and drive pose to all who share the road with them.”
The department traditionally announces its saturation initiatives in an effort to prevent drunk driving and other traffic offenses before enforcing them.
