The Ocean City Police Department and the John R. Elliott HERO Campaign are teaming up to promote designated driving in a unique way — on one of the city’s patrol cars.
In the first of its kind, an Ocean City police car will feature HERO Campaign signage aimed at preventing drinking and driving. The official unveiling of the HERO-themed patrol car is scheduled for noon Wednesday in front of the Ocean City Music Pier on the Boardwalk at Moorlyn Terrace.
The Crown Victoria police cruiser will be a rolling reminder of the campaign’s signature message, “Be a HERO. Be a Designated Driver,” and its trademark HERO logo. When not on patrol, the cruiser will be displayed at community events, on the Boardwalk and at local schools to educate students and the public about the importance of responsibility and the dangers of drinking and driving.
The HERO Campaign is a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing impaired driving by promoting the use of safe and sober designated drivers in memory of Navy Ensign John R. Elliott, of Egg Harbor Township, who was killed in a collision with a drunk driver in July 2000.
