With a ground-shaking rumble, the former Palermo’s Family Market collapsed on itself shortly before 10 a.m. Thursday as a demolition crew worked to tear the abandoned building down.

Debris from the wreckage spilled onto a small area of Asbury Avenue that had been coned off during the demolition work.

Immediate neighbors reported seeing the building sway briefly before crashing to the ground as an excavator took out a back wall.

With gravity taking care of the largest portion of the remaining demolition, crews set to work knocking down the remaining structure and hauling away debris.

The demolition began on Tuesday, and the developer estimated the job would take a week. It now appears possible that work could be complete ahead of schedule.
