Major milestones in life cannot be forgotten. The COVID-19 pandemic may have altered plans for a traditional graduation ceremony at Carey Stadium for the Ocean City High School Class of 2020.
But there will be a ceremony — just a socially distant one — this Thursday at 10 a.m.
However, due to Gov. Phil Murphy’s order that there may be no more than 500 people assembled at an outdoor event, only the graduates and school faculty will be permitted in the stadium.
The ceremony will be livestreamed for families and friends to view in real time at https://www.youtube.com/user/OCNJSchools.
In a letter by High School Principal Matt Jamison posted on the school district’s website oceancityschools.org, he said that the students are the main focus.
“Throughout the region, high schools have developed their graduation ceremonies based on their school cultures and needs. We have done this as well. In developing our plans, we have kept the students as the focus center,” Jamison said.
He explained that the decision to go ahead with a socially distant ceremony was keeping with the students’ wishes to have an actual commencement.
“In speaking with many seniors, they shared that they wanted a “real” graduation in the stadium and as traditional as possible. We believe having the students together as a whole — the Class of 2020 — in an official manner one final time is the proper and well-deserved format to commencement.”
Jamison also expressed his feelings about the executive order restrictions.
“Because of the conditions, mandates and requirements of the executive order, the outdoor graduation ceremony must be limited to 500 participants total — this includes students and faculty,” he said. “Therefore, no parents, family, and guests will be permitted in the stadium during the ceremony. I know and with my heart, understand that this will be disappointing to many.”
Details of the graduation ceremony were provided in a press release by JASM Consulting, the school district’s public relations representative.
The procession will begin at Fifth Street and the Boardwalk and continue down the middle of Fifth Street. Police will block off the street to traffic and parking. The graduates will walk to the “Observatory” entrance on Fifth Street to enter the stadium and make their way to seating in the stadium.
If there is inclement weather, the ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 10.
