The official election results from the Nov. 4 general election in Cape May County have been amended slightly due to incomplete voter registration statistics.
The amended voter registration total now includes inactive voters as well as new voter registrations, according to Cape May County Clerk and Adjuster Rita Marie Fulginiti.
The vote totals remain the same. The change affects only the reported total number of registered voters (and thus the voter turnout statistics).
The County Clerk’s elections staff met Friday with the Board of Elections to verify that the complete report was pulled from the Statewide Voter Registration System.
The county’s online http://www.capemaycountyvotes.com/ and paper certifications have been updated, according to Fulginiti.
The official results released earlier this week suggested that Ocean City’s total number of registered voters for the Nov. 4 election was 8,304 — more than 700 fewer than the 9,033 that were registered at the time of the municipal election in May.
But the updated numbers indicate that 8,976 voters were registered for the Nov. 4 election. With 4,379 Ocean City voters going to the polls, voter turnout was 48.8 percent.
An inquiry from OCNJ Daily about the originally reported 700-voter decrease in Ocean City helped lead to the updated voter registration numbers.
Final results in the race for three Ocean City Board of Education seats, the only local contest on the ballot, remain unchanged:
- Joseph S. Clark Jr. (2,189)
- Cecelia Gallelli-Keyes (2,150)
- Michael Allan James (2,072)
- Dale F. Braun Jr. (1,742)
Write-in votes for the Ocean City Board of Education candidates were as follows:
- Michaela Walsh: 2
- Braun: 1
- Gregory Winegar: 1
- Joseph Edwards: 1
- Joseph M. Lehman Jr.: 1
- Jen Bowman: 1
- James Stockley: 1 (vote by mail)
- Maryann McLaughlin 1 (vote by mail)
Voting machines and materials are impounded until Nov. 19, which is the deadline for a which a petition for recount (of the voting machine totals and paper ballots), a recheck (of the voting machine totals) or a challenge to the election may be filed in Superior Court, according to the Cape May County Clerk’s Office.
Ocean City sided with the losing candidate, Republican Jeff Bell, in the race for a U.S. Senate seat won by Democrat Cory Booker. Ocean City cast 2,340 votes for Bell and 1,576 for Booker.
Ocean City voters overwhelming chose Republican incumbent Frank LoBiondo (2,766 votes) over Democratic challenger Bill Hughes Jr. (1,534 votes), a native of Ocean City.
