Officer Brendan Gheen, Capt. Vito DiMarco and Officer Karl Ruf were honored by City Council on Thursday for actions that likely saved a young woman’s life after an accident on July 14.

Mayor Jay Gillian and City Council honored Ocean City police officers and firefighters for saving a young pedestrian who was struck by a car and pinned against a tree in an accident July 14 on the 1400 block of Haven Avenue.

A driver leaving a parking spot lost control of her car and drove onto a sidewalk, striking the woman.

Ocean City police officers Brendan Gheen and Karl Ruf, and Ocean City Fire Capt. Vito DiMarco were first responders who freed the woman and applied a tourniquet to her severely injured leg. She was airlifted from the scene.

The action saved the woman’s life, hospital officials said, according to a proclamation read by the mayor and approved by council on Thursday.

Firefighters Jon Furey, Ryan Lenegan and Bernie Walker, and EMT Winston Roberts also were honored in the proclamation.

Fellow police officers and firefighters lined Council Chambers to support their department members as they were recognized on Thursday.
